Lenten Moon Over
the Legislature The RASC Calendar calls today's full Moon the Worm Moon. According to the Farmers' Almanac, "as the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins." I might prefer the Crust Moon, "because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night." It was thus on Riverside Drive this evening as I set up my tripod on the crusty snow of the North Saskatchewan River valley. To the settlers, "it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter." As I took a time lapse sequence of the Moon rising over the Alberta Legislature building, with the temperature at -21 C and falling, I sincerely hoped that this indeed was the last full Moon of winter. I'm sure Edmontonians all hailed the Lenten Moon! Here's a crop of one of the frames that illustrates the full moon illusion., 1/4 sec, ISO800. |
